Three Timeless Lessons from Anthony Hopkins on Motivation, Respect, and Enjoying the Journey.

A couple of days ago, I was having dinner with two colleagues, and our conversation drifted to the topic of films and actors. As we shared our favourites, Anthony Hopkins’ name came up. I mentioned an interview I had read some time ago and the notes I had taken from it. His insights had left a lasting impression on me.

This reflection took me back to that moment—a flight to Düsseldorf, where I came across his interview in Lufthansa Magazin. What struck me most was how his thoughts on motivation, respect, and enjoying the journey aligned perfectly with the principles I believe are essential for leadership and personal growth.

I’m glad I took out my notebook that day to jot down a few reflections, which I can now share with you:

The Power of Motivation

At one point, the interviewer asked Hopkins whether actors needed to remain constantly motivated. His response was simple yet profound: yes, absolutely. Motivation, he explained, is a cornerstone of the craft. Without it, actors risk becoming complacent, and complacency inevitably leads to substandard work.

“Motivated actors want to achieve great things,” Hopkins shared. “I still want to achieve great things.”

Here was a man, nearing his 80th birthday, still fuelled by a relentless drive to grow, create, and excel. His words served as a powerful reminder that passion and purpose are ageless—they thrive as long as we nurture them.

Respect: The Foundation of Teamwork

Another topic that resonated deeply was respect—specifically, how essential it is to treat everyone with dignity, regardless of their role. Hopkins spoke about actors and actresses who let their egos inflate, behaving arrogantly towards others on set. When he encounters such behaviour, he takes a moment to observe and then addresses it directly, often asking: Would you like to be treated this way?

“And it’s not just about actors,” he added. “It’s about everyone on the team—waiters, drivers, lighting technicians, everyone. Everyone deserves to be treated decently.”

These words highlight the importance of humility and empathy in any collaborative environment. True greatness, Hopkins implied, is reflected not just in talent but in how we treat those around us.

The Art of Enjoying the Process

The final point that struck me was his perspective on enjoying life’s journey. In today’s world, where every moment seems meticulously planned and every task is a race against time, Hopkins emphasised the value of slowing down and being present.

“Nowadays, every minute of the day is structured,” he said. “So it’s even more important to enjoy life, take a breather, and look around.”

This philosophy is a reminder to embrace life’s simple pleasures and cherish the process, rather than rushing to the destination. Whether you’re pursuing a career, a creative endeavour, or a personal goal, finding joy along the way is what makes the journey truly meaningful.

Three Timeless Lessons

Motivation, respect, and enjoying the process—these are three timeless lessons I learned from a remarkable actor during what could have been an ordinary flight. Instead of dozing off, I came away inspired by his words, reminded that greatness lies not only in our achievements but in the way we approach life and treat others along the way.

It’s fascinating how the wisdom of someone else, shared at the right moment, can profoundly impact your perspective. For me, that interview was one of those moments—an unexpected gift from a master storyteller who, even at nearly 80, continues to inspire.
